ART

Open MindzTM also engages in cultural production, specifically in the visual arts, to promote creativity and latent genius in artistic expression for both kids and adults.

Initially the basics in shape, space, value and color will be handled. Color blending techniques, proportions for composition, texture and form make an integral part of the course. Perspective for the landscape and detailing for portraits may be part of the course depending on the advanced level of the course. The most fundamental element of all drawing is the line - but not all lines are alike! Learn about different line qualities and the most essential skill of drawing - contour drawing. All drawings are made up of lines and shapes. You’ll focus on the types of lines that make up the various shapes that are the core structure for all drawings.

All drawings are made up of lines and shapes. You’ll focus on the types of lines that make up the various shapes that are the core structure for all drawings. Your eyes will be trained and your hands need to be synchronized! You’ll learn some tips to place items in a drawing - or “composition” - to get the best results! You’ll be encouraged to take some common everyday item, for instance, a shoe - as your subject for a completed contour drawing. This is a true test of whether you draw what you see or what you know.

There will be some easy chalk art work which will involve the usage of a good pencil, good white or grey kneaded eraser, white sheets, subjects such as apples, a black fine marker or pen, a grey or black charcoal pencil, chalk pastels etc.

You’ll focus on the art element of value - the lightness or darkness of your subject matter. Learn to achieve high or low contrast in a drawing. There’s more to color than a rainbow! Make your own color wheel! Learn about primary, secondary, warm and cool colors as you jump into the world of drawing with color. Focus on color complements (opposites) and inter- mediate colors. They are so important for achieving accurate shadows and realism in your drawings! Soon you will continue to explore key principles in achieving aerial perspective (a sense of depth and realism) when drawing landscapes in color. The tried-and-true medium of crayon is used for a lovely landscape exercise that any young artist can do!
